In this episode, we share our experience recording live at the 2017 Bluebonnet Brew Off where we set up in the main lobby to catch some of the action and talk to some of the attendees. Plus, Michael Fairbrother of Moonlight Meadery was this year's keynote speaker (his first time!) and we were lucky enough to get some time with him to talk about the mead making process. If you did not know, Moonlight Meadery is a leader in the market for nationally distributed meads and is often cited as a prime example in BJCP styles.

We started this episode with a discussion about BBBO 2017 and a chat with Bones from the Central Arkansas Fermenters so Brandon and Arkansas could settle the score. Then James Herrington of The Collective Brewing Project joined the fray. Afterward, we had a history filled discussion about the beginning of the BBBO with a couple of the original founders of the event AND the Cap and Hare Homebrew club, Rob Stenson and Moon. We even squeezed in a few minutes with details about being on the other side of the homebrewer life with some brewer wives.

Our discussion with Michael about mead making was quite enlightening, as he gave us a few tips and tricks to consider when trying to make the best mead possible with the shortest period for maturation. Because let's face it, no one wants to wait a year or more for a quality mead. You want to make something delicious that can be enjoyed in a few months versus a few years. He reiterates many of the details that are also referenced in the 2015 BJCP Mead Style Guide, while introducing a few tips of his own. For example, checking into the use of the calculator at meadmakr and using Lavlin 71B-1122 as the canvas for his artwork.
